By 2020, the government would like all schools to be models of energy efficiency, renewable energy use and water management. They should take the lead in their communities by showcasing wind, solar and biofuel energy, low-energy equipment, freshwater conservation, use of rainwater and other measures. The government has recognised that the installation of renewable energy technologies in schools and community settings are an excellent way to educate the next generation and has pledged all new schools will be zero carbon from 2016. 542 schools have already been offered grants totalling over £8.8 million for the installation of local renewables under Phase 2 of the Local Carbon Buildings Programme.

Reduce your school's environmental impact by taking control of its energy and water use, while simultaneously demonstrating citizenship and stewardship of natural resources.

Reduce heat loss at home by ensuring you have good insulation. Stopping draughts, shutting doors and install secondary/double glazing will all reduce the energy needed to heat your home.
Don't have lights on that you don't need. Turn lights off when leaving a room, or use light level and movement sensors to turn lights on automatically when they're needed. Use low energy light bulbs.
Control radiators by installing individual thermostat and install foil behind them. Check water temperature (60oC is quite hot enough)
Ensure appliances are energy efficient, and turn them off when they're not in use.
Run a Green Day or Green Week at your school. The aim is to have fun and showcase what you have achieved so far and to inspire even more people to get involved in taking care of the environment. Check out our Green Day Guide.
Remember, inspiring others is all part of the journey to make us more sustainable!
