about
Podometers have been designed especially for the Pod website.
They help you see the potential impact of all the activities that
your school and others have been running.
There are different kinds of pod-o-meter, depending on the data
that is fed into them: energy, water, carbon dioxide and waste
savings, and biodiversity projects in progress.

about the pod-o-meters
The gadgets above are called
pod-o-meters. They have been designed specially for the Pod
website.
They help you see the potential impact of all the activities
that your school and others have been running. There are different
kinds of pod-o-meter, depending on the data that is fed into them:
Energy, Water, Carbon Dioxide or Waste. We will add others as the
Pod develops.
Your school has its own pod-o-meter to help you understand the
possible impact of the activities that you have been running. There
is also a national pod-o-meter which covers all school
activities.
Audits
The data that drives these pod-o-meters is supplied by schools
across the UK. When you start an activity, we ask you to submit an
audit telling us how your school is currently doing: for instance,
how many lights you are currently leaving on, how many people are
currently being driven to school or how much bottled water students
are currently drinking. Then you run a campaign where you persuade
your school to make changes.
At the end of your campaign, we ask you to submit a second
audit, recording how your school is doing now. You also pledge to
keep up the good work that you have done in the course of your
campaign. This enables us to work out the difference between your
two audits and predict the savings you could continue to make in
the future as a result of the changes you made in your school.
Collecting the data
Depending on the activity, your audit data will be fed into the
Energy, Water, Waste or Carbon Dioxide pod-o-meter. For example, if
it's a water activity, then your school's water pod-o-meter will be
updated with the litres of water your school could now save every
minute of the day compared to the original audit. If it's an
activity which covers several areas, then several pod-o-meters will
be updated at the same time.
We always try to use the latest available data for measuring
electricity, water or carbon usage. The figures could come from a
number of sources. For example, they could be supplied by EDF
Energy, a government department such as DEFRA or an academic
institution such as Cambridge University.
